Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
