No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
