Everyone Are Encouraged to Join as the Fourth Haim Member.
"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."
However, there remains a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Several high-profile admirers have openly petitioned for the role.
It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.
Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."
"So all is invited to be the next Haim sister."
Grammy Recognition
The group are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.
They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.
"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The significance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.
"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."
Personal Turmoil and Laughter
The record was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The lyrics follow departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.
"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."
Refinement of Style
That recent toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.
"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."
Experiences and Collective Humor
The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.
One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."
A Secure Legacy
You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.
They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.
But the band will forever be their primary focus.
"We have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
