RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
